Summer Foot Rescue – Oh Those Strappy Sandals

Summer Foot Rescue - Oh Those Strappy Sandals Linda Franklin The Real Cougar Womanby Linda Franklin

I just had to write an article about my aching feet. I love summer but the agony of walking around New York City in sandals, heels or even flip flops is no fun.  The heels on my shoes are relatively low, maybe 3 inches.  Anything higher than that is an accident waiting to happen. I honestly don’t know how women wear stilettos – it’s got to be excruciating.

The Wall Street Journal did a story on feet, so there must be a universal cry out for more comfortable shoes. This is peak season for foot pain. Feet swell and sweat in warmer weather, which changes the way shoes fit. As summer wears on, calluses develop and pain subsides. But then, through winter, feet lose their toughness if you don’t continue wearing the shoes. By next spring, the cycle begins all over again.

Manufacturers are flooding drugstores with solutions, products designed to cushion the foot against cuts and blisters. Here are a few ideas on how to deal with our barking dogs.

Moleskin –  biggest benefit it can  be cut into any shape and size with a pair of scissors, and it comes in skin tones, so it can be hidden. But, sometimes it comes off while you’re walking. So try putting it on the shoe rather than your foot.

Dr. Scholl’s Rub Relief Foam Strips, sold in a tape-like dispenser so you can cut it to the desired length and attach to a sandal strap. It’s not as durable as moleskin but give it a try.

Foot Petals –  These are sturdy pads, some with adhesive strips for sandal straps, in colors including black, white, brown and silver.

Wax – Anyi Lu, a designer of stylish, comfortable shoes rubs candle wax or beeswax on problem areas of the leather lining the shoe interior to soften and smooth them.

Foot Soak For blistered feet, a 10-minute soak in brewed black tea; the astringent tea will kill bacteria (and odor), Anyi Lau says. Follow the soak with antibiotic salve and a bandage.

Even flip-flops give us pain.  As they flip and flop with each step, they can create hot spots and blisters between the toes or in the place on top where the V-strap rubs.

So what are we to do?  I suppose we have to continue our search for that perfect pair of shoes. A shoe thatt not only looks good, but feels like you’re  walking on air. Let me know if that perfect pair of really exists.  Excuse me now, because I have to go soak.

  1. Shoes can be brutal on my feet. Believe it or not, I use clear packing tape on my tootsies. I can wear even the strappiest of sandals with no cutting or blisters. I wrap the tape around the top of my foot and also on the heel. It stays secure and my feet are protected.
