Iris Robinson – What Was She Thinking?

Mrs. Robinson strikes again, but this time it's not on the big screen.  Iris Robinson a 60-year-old member of Parliament from Northern Ireland had an affair with a (gulp) teenage boy.  Her husband Peter Robinson, is — or was, until he stepped down temporarily – Northern Ireland's first minister and head of the socially conservative Democratic Unionist Party. This is a sex scandal with geopolitical implications. Iris robinson

Mr. Robinson said, I felt betrayed after almost 40 years of being happily and closely bonded together."

As sex scandals go so this one is a bonanza.  Mrs. Robinson was 59 when she started sleeping with a 19-year-old. She had known Kirk McCambley since he was a child and she patronized his father's East Belfast butcher shop. As he was dying, the elder McCambley asked Mrs. Robinson to look after his son — "She made sure I was okay," Kirk McCambley said.

Where would a juicy political scandal be without a hefty dose of hypocrisy?  Mrs. R, an evangelical Christian is described as "fire and brimstone in a Laura Ashley package,".  She liked to emphasize  the government's "responsibility to uphold God's laws" and described homosexuality as "an abomination" comparable to — get this — pedophilia. Her husband seconded that assessment. "It wasn't Iris Robinson who determined that homosexuality was an abomination, it was the Almighty," Peter Robinson said.

Iris Robinson described the seven-month relationship as "a brief affair" that "had no emotional or lasting meaning."  She claimed full responsibility but suggested that her mental illness was a significant factor explaining her irrational behavior.

Isn't it amazing how these people feel they are untouchable?  You would think they would learn that it's just a matter of time before all the dirty laundry will be aired for the whole world to see.
