We finally get the government to pass a provision under the Affordable Care Act requiring insurance companies to cover contraception and now it looks like we could be back at square one.
It sure feels like the Obama Administration is going to cave into the Catholics and other religious zealots and create an “opt out” provision for employers who don’t want their insurance programs to cover birth control for women. I don’t remember anyone protesting when insurance companies decided to cover Viagra.
Many women still go to Planned Parenthood for their birth control because it costs half the price of going to the pharmacy with insurance, if they have it, that doesn’t cover what women really need.
Our Presidents talk about abortion with limiting language. Abortion should be legal and “rare” – if you want abortion to be rare then isn’t contraception the answer? The U.S. has the highest rate of second trimester abortions in the industrialized world (we also have the highest rate of teen pregnancies and STDs). It’s all about economics – and that’s just not right.
“42% of women having abortions live on an income that falls below the federal poverty level – they are making less than the $208 per week needed to pay for the basic necessities of life – and 53% of women having abortions between weeks 16 and 20 gestation are women in this low-income bracket.”
They have to wait to save up the money to get the abortion because they’re living on $200/week.
If men got pregnant, maybe they’d be singing a different tune.

Katie Couric has split with her boyfriend of five years Brooks Perlin. Apparently, things have been rocky for a number of months and they both decided to call it quits. The couple had a 17 year age gap, so another famous cougar relationship bites the dust.
‘When he called, he asked me if I wanted to be in a sailing competition with him. I don’t sail. Then he asked me if I wanted to go surfing, and I’d never surfed. I said, “listen Mr Outward Bound, how about something normal?”.
The mother-of-two said it didn’t even cross her mind how old he was at the time. It was only later when she confided in friends that she was going on a date that they googled him.
She considered cancelling but was persuaded by friends not to and did not look back.
In April, Couric gave a gushing interview to People magazine about her relationship, saying Brooks ‘challenges me in ways no one has ever challenged me before’ and that ‘they just clicked’.
But only a month later, she hinted at trouble with the green building-materials distributor, saying: ‘I am in the process of figuring out the future, and so is he. I am really happy in my personal life . . . but it is complicated.’
So, are all cougar relationships doomed to failure? I don’t think so, but like any other relationships it requires constant attention and dedication.

Bad behaviour is often overlooked, or more likely tolerated, in any relationship, but everyone has a breaking point. A woman is likely to stand by her man through lots of harrowing experiences and then snap over something that is relatively less offensive.

They are the three little words at the heart of every serious relationship. And for years, there has been a perception that women, rather than men, are almost always the first to confess ‘I love you’.
But it turns out that it’s men who not only fall in love earlier but are also more likely to declare they are smitten sooner than their female lover.
Previous studies have found that not only are women more expressive about how they feel but that they are expected, by both sexes, to be ones who fall in love first.
The reality, according to the latest findings by psychologist Marissa Harrison, from Pennsylvania State University in the U.S., is that women are actually more circumspect than men when it comes to romance.
Professor Harrison interviewed 172 college students on whether they had ever been in love and, if so, whether it had taken days, weeks or months to realise they were infatuated with their partner.
They were then asked how far into a relationship they got before they openly declared their emotions.
The results, published in the Journal of Social Psychology, showed men were more likely to fall in love within a few weeks, while most women said it took several months.
Men were also more inclined to tell their partner they loved them much sooner in the relationship.
The results fly in the face of common belief that women fall in love more easily than their male counterparts. ’Perhaps women are perceived as less rational about love because they have a greater capacity for processing emotional experiences.’
More predictably, this new research showed that men wanted sex for the first time after a few weeks, while most women preferred to wait a few months.
